Saracens beat Heughers

Saracens beat Heughers

Ian Smith26 Oct - 11:54

Rovers Heughers 17 - 36 Stockton Saracens

The Heughers went down to Stockton Saracens in an entertaining game at a breezy and nippy New Friarage yesterday.

Saracens took the lead to go 0-7 up before James Keers crashed over from a quickly taken penalty following an electric break from Alec Bramfitt. 5-7. The Stockton side got into a bit of a groove scoring 4 unanswered tries to lead 5-31 before the Heughers got some reward for their continuous efforts with Harry Calvert making great ground up the pitch and Alec Bramfitt finishing off the move by scoring out wide. 10-31. Stockton scored again but Rovers had the final say after Kev Maguire took a penalty and charged into the nearest available clump of defenders. He managed to hold them off and free his arms enough to pop the ball to the supporting James Keers. With Squid's conversion the final score was 17-36.

Thanks to referee Garry Strong who kept the game flowing and handled the match well. Also congratulations to Stockton Saracens on their win in what was an entertaining game played in excellent spirits.

For Rovers we had several chances to put more points on the board but knocked on or were held up over the line. Our commitment couldn't be faulted though.

We had a decent squad out with the amount of players in certain positions causing a bit of a mathematical problem but everyone got equal game time in their position. With yesterday's turnout I make it that we have had 59 different players feature for the Heughers already in the first 2 months of the season. An encouraging number but we just need to get the frequency of availability up a tad.

One of the most encouraging aspects of the game was that half a dozen of our promising Colts side bolstered out ranks yesterday. All played well and the man of the match award went to Jake McMorris. Jake has just turned 17 earlier this month and he had a fine senior debut. He showed that he is a clever and committed player and demonstrated an excellent willingness to listen and learn. He should have a great future if he continues to work hard and develop his game.
