Hartlepool Rovers fell to a narrow and frustrating 26–24 defeat at home to Houghton in a match that swung repeatedly in momentum and ultimately slipped away in the final moments.
Both sides opened with intensity, but it was Houghton who settled first. They nudged ahead through penalties on 19 and 31 minutes to take a 6–0 lead.
Rovers responded well. Sustained pressure late in the half saw Gunn crash over for the hosts’ first try, although the conversion drifted wide. That left the score at 5–6 heading into the break.
Just after half-time, Calvert was shown a yellow card for not rolling away. Houghton capitalised quickly, producing a well‑executed cross‑field kick on 45 minutes which was gathered by their winger to score in the Steetley corner. The tough conversion was missed.
Three minutes later, Houghton struck again with a converted try. A break through midfield and a neat offload sent support racing in from the 22 to score near the posts, stretching their advantage to 18–5.
That shock seemed to jolt Rovers into life.
On 52 minutes, Lee Clayton powered his way over to cut the deficit (conversion missed). Two minutes later, Houghton saw a player binned, and Rovers immediately took advantage. Clayton crossed again on 58 minutes, and Fawcett added the extras to bring the score back to 17–18.
By the hour mark, Rovers had completely seized the momentum. From an attacking scrum 10 metres out, Charters picked from the base and bulldozed over, dragging three Houghton defenders with him. Fawcett converted, giving Rovers a 24–18 lead—and at that stage they looked firmly in control.
But the hosts then eased off, and Houghton found a way back.
On 72 minutes, the visitors scored an unconverted try to close the gap to 24–23. As the tension mounted, Rovers tried to regain field position, but on 78 minutes heartbreak followed: Houghton’s kicker held his nerve and slotted a superb 40‑metre penalty to edge them ahead 26–24.
Rovers pushed hard in the final moments but couldn’t reclaim the lead.
Full‑time: Hartlepool Rovers 24–26 Houghton
A disappointing result given the quality shown during a dominant 25‑minute spell in the second half. There were passages of excellent rugby, but the performance needed to last the full 80. Plenty of positives—but plenty to learn from too.
