Whitley Bay Rockcliff 39 – 33 Rovers
Rovers returned to league action with a trip to Whitley Bay Rockcliff, playing in sunny and mild conditions in front of a large and vocal home crowd.
The visitors produced a spirited and much‑improved performance, but ultimately came up short against a well‑drilled Rockcliff side who continue their pressure on second‑placed Houghton. Despite the defeat, Rovers can take plenty of encouragement from an entertaining display.
Rovers started brightly, moving the ball wide and sticking to the game plan, but it was the hosts who opened the scoring with a converted try for a 7–0 lead. The response was immediate and unusual. O’Callaghan stole possession of a Rockcliff lineout. As both sides expected a pass to the scrum‑half, Pat spotted space, turned, and sprinted untouched to score. The conversion drifted wide, leaving the score 7–5.
Rovers continued to stretch the home defence, with Fawcett almost sending Keers over via a perfectly weighted cross‑field kick—only for the winger to agonisingly knock on at full stretch. To add insult, Smith’s attempt to clear the ball into touch ricocheted off Keers’ chest and face from close range.
Some ill‑discipline then gave Rockcliff a penalty, extending their lead to 10–5.
Rovers hit back with another well‑worked try, moving the ball through the hands to put Trimble away. Barnfield then sold a smart dummy to go over, with Fawcett converting to give Rovers a 10–12 advantage.
The match continued to ebb and flow. Poor tackling allowed Rockcliff to cross out wide for an unconverted try, restoring their lead at 15–12. Both sides threatened further scores but cancelled each other out as the half drew to a close.
Half-time: Rockcliff 15–12 Rovers
Rovers came out strongly after the break, earning a penalty and kicking to the corner. A well‑executed lineout move allowed Gunn to charge towards the line. Although hauled down short, prop Lee Clayton picked up from close range to power over, continuing his fine try‑scoring form. The conversion put Rovers ahead once more at 15–19.
But again, they couldn’t build the scoreboard pressure needed to pull clear. Rockcliff responded with a wide move of their own to retake the lead, 20–19.
A clever chip from Fawcett caught the home defence flat‑footed, with Barnfield reacting quickest to grab his second of the afternoon. Fawcett added the extras to make it 20–26.
Unfortunately, Rovers then drifted off the boil, and a yellow card to Cairns tilted momentum firmly towards the hosts. Rockcliff capitalised, scoring 19 unanswered points through three penalties and two tries—one of which came from a series of missed tackles which frustrated the players, coaches, and large travelling support. With the score at 39–26, all Rovers’ earlier good work looked in danger of being undone.
There was still time for one last effort. With the final play of the game, Keers darted over from close range, and Fawcett converted to secure two well‑earned losing bonus points.
Full-time: Rockcliff 39–33 Rovers
Despite the disappointing end, this was a vastly improved showing from Rovers. Rockcliff deserved credit for their direct, powerful play, but the visitors produced long periods of exciting, attacking rugby—moving the ball well, supporting one another, and rediscovering the structure that had been missing in recent weeks.
A particular positive was the presence of four Colts on the pitch at full-time, all of whom performed impressively and will only benefit as they continue their transition into senior rugby next season.
