Phil Mitchell

We are saddened to share the news of Phil Mitchell’s sudden passing.

Phil was a dedicated member of the club for over 40 years, contributing in countless ways throughout his time with us. He began his journey as a player, always ready to represent the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd XV whenever called upon. His first try for the senior team came against Fylde in September 1983, with his final one scored in the 1991 Oakes game.

In 1989, following Keith Lister’s retirement as Honorary Secretary, Phil stepped into the role and served until 1993, when he was appointed Club Chairman. He held that position with distinction for 18 years. In 2000, he became one of the club’s Trustees, a role he fulfilled until the Constitution was amended in 2021.

Phil’s leadership continued as he was named Senior Vice President in 2011, and then President in 2013. He served as President for a decade before stepping down, becoming the club’s first Immediate Past President under the revised Constitution.

Even after retiring from formal management roles, Phil remained a steadfast supporter of the club, notably as a valued member of the Tuesday morning working party.

Outside of rugby, Phil was a well-respected solicitor, known for his professionalism, integrity, and dedication to his clients and colleagues alike. His standing in the legal community reflected the same values he brought to the club—commitment, fairness, and a genuine care for others.

Phil was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren and always there to offer support. He would regularly talk about them with pride.

Phil was a true gentleman whose presence and contributions will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Carol, Thomas, Jonathan, Grace, and the wider family during this difficult time.
