Hartlepool Rovers returned from their visit to sunny Redcar with a 5-point haul.

Rovers kicked off the 1st half aided by the strong wind blowing at their backs, which paid havoc with the spectators Lemon-Tops. Early Rovers pressure was rewarded almost immediately when they put a good kick chase through that caused Redcar to complete a goal-line dropout, the clearance kick was fielded by Trimble and the winger beat the 1st man. The Rovers pack won quick ruck ball and LITTLE hit a great line and crashed over near to the posts. Barnfield converted (0-7, 2 Mins).
From the restart Rovers were back onto the front foot and were playing some controlled rugby, with Keers prominent they managed to get over the line again but were held up and Redcar had to complete another goal-line drop-out. The ball held up in the wind this time and was fielded by Harrison, he made ground and was tackled just inside the home 22, the ruck ball was moved swiftly and Rochester dummied and split the home defence, he found KEERS in support and the centre went over under the posts. Barnfield converted (0-14, 6 Mins).
The seaside trip became even better for Rovers when a clever grubber kick from Rochester was chased hard by Trimble who forced a knock-on in the tackle. The Rovers scrum edged forward and LITTLE picked up and drove blind to score in the corner. The difficult conversion was missed. (0-19, 9 Mins).
Redcar finally woke up and took the game to Rovers, when a couple of penalties awarded from referee Mick Bolton gave Redcar field position deep in the visitors 22, from a number of close rucks the Redcar no. 8 forced his way over. The Redcar winger converted. (7-19, 12 Mins).
Rovers regained possession and a clever 50-22 by Rochester got Rovers the field position needed deep in the home 22, the lineout drill was again good and just as the maul started to move forward the ball was delivered to the Rovers backs who passed crisply to release HARRISON who beat his defender on the outside for a good wingers finish. Once again, the conversion was missed. (7-24, 19 Mins).
The Rovers stand-off was at it again drilling a kick deep into the home 22 and it once again a good chase forced a knock on by Redcar. The Rovers scrum was good and the ball moved to ROCHESTER who dummied to Keers and stepped through a gap to run in from the 22 to score under the posts. Barnfield kicked the easy conversion. (7-31, 30 Mins).
Rovers then became guilty of over-complicating things and were made to pay when in the last minute of the first half, the Redcar pack won a series of quick rucks deep in the visitors 22 and the home flanker scored near to the posts. The conversion was kicked (14-31, 40 Mins).
Half Time 14-31
Rovers now had to play into the strong gale and they knew that they needed a good start to damped the Redcar resilience, unfortunately it was Redcar who started brightly and put Rovers under pressure deep in their own 22, winning a ruck under the Rovers posts, the ball was moved to the right swiftly and the home winger went in at the corner. The touchline conversion was missed. (19-31, 45 Mins).
Rovers started to assert themselves again with back rowers Charters and Reed to the fore and on 54 minutes the teams efforts were rewarded. When from a training ground move LITHGO hit a good line cutting back and found a gap and stormed in from 40 metres for a deserved try. Barnfield Converted. (19-38, 50 Mins).
Redcar had a good spell of pressure but some big tackles from Rovers kept knocking them back with Pinchen leading an aggressive defensive effort. The visitors defensive effort was rewarded when the ever-improving Powell won a penalty at a ruck, causing the Redcar player to hold on. The penalty was kicked to touch by Fawcett, who was on at halftime for the injured Rochester and the Rovers pack took over with close rucks moving the Redcar forwards back to their line, with a full back line of players waiting for the ball to be moved from the ruck, GLAISTER-SMITH snook over on the blind side for the try. The conversion into the wind was held up. (19-43, 65 Mins).
The final Rovers try was scored in the 74th minute when Reed got his reward for an all-action display when he combined with his back row colleagues to put Trimble away who beat a couple and found support on the inside when he was tackled and REED pumped his legs and powered in from 45 meters. Barnfield converted to bring up the 50 points.
With the last play Redcar got a 4 try bonus point when from a number of ruck penalties they moved into the Rovers 22, they home side appeared to drop the ball and the Rovers defence stopped waiting for the referee to blow his whistle but he was unsighted and this allowed the hard working home flanker to score the try in the corner. The Redcar conversion was missed and the referee brough the game to a close.
