Improved Performance by Rovers Yields 5 Point Return

Hartlepool Rovers gave a controlled, disciplined perfomance to take the spoils.

Hartlepool Rovers had the perfect start when from the first kick off, referee Dinsdale noticed a Westoe forward Infront of the kicker and awarded Rovers a scrum on the halfway line. The scrum held and the ball was moved at pace along the back line putting Trimble through the gap and KEERS received an inside pass to score in the corner. The difficult conversion was missed. (0-5, 2 Mins).
Westoe were attacking down the bank in the 1st half and started to ask Rovers defence questions with their direct running, the Rovers defence was up to the task with the big runners being chopped down by low tackling allowing Rovers to contest the ball. Just when it looked like Rovers had held firm Westoe managed to find a gap and a back row players drove for the line, Rovers stopped him scoring but a penalty for hands in the ruck was awarded. The Westoe 2nd row took a tap and was unstoppable from 2 yards out and crashed over. The conversion was missed. (5-5, 15 Mins).
Rovers once again got to work, making ground up the bank with some good controlled forward work, however they knocked the ball on in contact allowing Westoe to clear the ball 60 metres down the pitch. The kick was taken cleanly by Harrison who fed the supporting Trimble who managed to find a gap in the on-rushing defence to make his way to the home 22, from the ruck the referee awarded a penalty and Rovers kicked to the corner. The Rovers lineout was working well with both O’Callaghan and Wilson winning good clean ball, the ball was won in the middle of the line and the Rovers pack moved their heavier opponents back infield towards their posts, just when the maul was moving at speed the ball was released to the backs and a switch in play allowed TRIMBLE the space he needed and he sped over for the try. Barnfield kicked the conversion (5-12, 19 Mins).
Rovers were continuing to attack, with the backline looking dangerous at every opportunity but some determined home defence kept them out. In midfield Rovers kicked towards the corner but the Westoe scrumhalf managed to charge down the kick and the ball spun up to the Westoe prop forward who charged down the bank, when the Rovers tacklers stopped him, he cleverly grubber kicked infield and the chasing Hooker managed to win the race to the ball for the try. The conversion was once again missed. (10-12, 29 Mins).
Westoe now had their tails up and from a good set scrum the centre hit a good line making inroads into the Rovers 22, the ball was won quickly and the home No. 8 hit a good line close to the ruck to score near to the posts. The conversion was kicked by the home scrumhalf. (17-12, 35 Mins).
Half Time 17-12
Rovers turned around with the elements and the bank in their favour and set about pinning the home side back with some clever kicking by Barnfield, this made Westoe have to work hard up the bank with one out runners. From one such ruck, Rovers won a turnover penalty from good work by Lloyd. Barnfield kicked the ball deep into the Westoe 22, O’Callaghan leapt like a salmon and claimed the ball in the middle of the lineout, the Rovers pack then took over and drove the maul over the line with hooker GLAISTER-SMITH emerging from the pile-up with the ball for a good try. Barnfield converted. (17-19, 43 Mins).
Rovers were now in front and continued to play common sense rugby forcing Westoe back into their half. Westoe finally made ground on 57 minutes when they won a midfield penalty, a quick tap and go caught the Rovers defenders napping and the Westoe fullback broke the line, from a quick ruck the home standoff noticed that the Rovers defence had left space out wide and a good kick allowed the home winger to take the crossfield kick and cross in the corner. The conversion was missed. (22-19, 57 Mins).
It was now all to play for and the next score was all important and from a good Rovers scrummage on 62 minutes the ball was moved quickly and Trimble hit a good line from fullback. The youngster sped away and drew the last man and popped the ball to KEERS who finished by rounding the winger and scoring under the posts. Barnfield kicked the easy conversion. (22-26, 62 Mins).
The Friaragemen them played cleverly down the bank with good kicks to the corners, Westoe were having to run the ball at every opportunity and this allowed Rovers to win ruck penalties for holding on, from one such penalty Rovers kicked the ball into the corner for the lineout in the home 22. The lineout was won cleanly and the Rovers forwards moved the ball infield with some good controlled rucking. Playing under advantage, JEFFERY proved unstoppable from 5 metres out and crashed over for the try. Barnfield converted. (22-33, 70 Mins).
Rovers scored their final try on 73 Minutes, when from a lineout steal the ball was moved across the field be the Rovers backline, the ruck was quick and the ball was switch back along the line to find 2nd Row Wilson lurking on the wing, he displayed a good turn of pace to make 40 metres. The full back tackle the Rovers player well but GLAISTER-SMITH arrived and noticed nobody from Westoe was guarding the ruck, allowing the hooker to pick up and drive for the line from 15 metres to score. Barnfield kicked the conversion. (22-40, 73 Mins).
The remained of the game was played out in the middle of the field and the referee brought the game to a finish.
