Rovers started the game well going downhill with the wind at their backs, Lilley put the home team under pressure with a high kick after a fine take by McGuire.
Rovers were well aware of the powerful Horden pack and added extra weight by using Tucker and Carroll in the front row with Little going into the second row. The first scrum was won against the head by Gregory after a fine hit and shove. The second scrum was the same and Wilson picked up from the base feeding Fawcett who scored and converted, 0 – 7.
The next scrum was more like the normal Horden and they were disrupting the Rovers put-in well by wheeling 90 degrees. Unfortunately the referee didn’t pick up on this all game but Rovers were doing an equal amount of damage on Horden ball.
Fawcett extended the lead with a well hit penalty for offside at a ruck, 0 - 10, then Baxter crossed for a try after more pressure at the scrum and lineout, 0 – 15.
Horden came back with trademark drives and mauled their way over after a poor tap back from a Rovers line, 5 – 15.
The second half started with Horden piling on the pressure at Rovers line but they held out well and quickly broke up the field with good passing across the backs, especially between S. Railton and Olwenny to give Lilley the opportunity to finish off in style, Fawcett converted, 5 – 22.
More good work followed and Fawcett kicked another penalty after a Horden infringement following a charge down from captain Durrans, 5 – 25. Gregory had to leave the field after 5 against the head, replaced by Fleet with Tucker moving to hooker and Little to prop.
Fleet wasted no time making his mark with a great run out of defence, the ball was quickly spread across the back line for Olwenny to score and Fawcett to convert, 5 – 32.
Rovers took their foot off the pedal for 5 minutes and let in a try with the full back running a great line through everyone and then more pressure gave another converted try, 19 – 32.
The game was sealed when Rovers worked their way back up and a little chip from Fawcett gave Olwenny his second with Fawcett converting to give a final score of 19 – 39.
A great team display especially in the scrum, beating Horden at their own game is not often seen on their own patch. Well done everyone.
