It didn’t take long for the scoring to start with good turnover work from Lee Maddisson, and a strong run by Matty Stephenson, playing in his preferred scrum-half position, then an intelligent kick into space by Graves for Mick Railton to score, converted by Fawcett, 7 – 0.
Fawcett used the strong wind wisely and a resulting 5m scrum brought a penalty due to good pressure in the tight from Lythe. This was kicked to touch and driven over by captain Wise, converted by Fawcett, 14 – 0. The next score came from indifferent passing along the back line, with the ball somehow managing to get to Ste Railton who ran a mazy line through the defence to score, the kick by Fawcett hit the post, 19 – 0.
Ste Railton scored his second shortly after from a similar position, capitalising on very poor defence by Morpeth, 24 – 0.
Rovers were growing in confidence and the estart was ran back at Morpeth twice across the width of the field to leave Andrew Arnell in space on the wing to score an unconverted try, 29 – 0. The forwards and backs were linking well with some god spells of inter-passing and after good work by Flounders and Ste Railton, Danny Baxter dummied and goose-stepped then used his pace to cross over from the half way line (no fines for me this week!)34 – 0.
The scrums were going very well and after the interval Big Shot Gregory came on, under pressure after a fine half from Fuzz Flounders, he wasted no time taking one against the head and soon after sprinted 40m down the wing to score a converted try, 41 – 0.
A great break from the impressive newcomer Lee Maddisson, man of the match for the second consecutive week gave Mick Railton his second try, 46 – 0, then Gregory, wearing the 12.5 shirt took a great crash ball for another 50m dash to the line, kicked by Fawcett, 53 – 0. Ste Railton got his third from an excellent cross-kick by Fawcett who kicked the conversion, 60 – 0, then scored his fourth after a good steal by the returning Flounders, 65 – 0.
Pinkey Graves scored from a crash ball after another scrum against the head by Gregory, Fawcett hit the post again with the conversion, 70 – 0. The last score came after good passing from Graves, Maddisson and Whitehead who had come on from the bench to replace the hard working Ben Atter. A following scrum gave Arnell the opportunity to go himself on the blind side to score with Fawcet converting, final score 77 –0.
A good display that will help build confidence for the forthcoming games, they now need to take this good form away from home.
A big well done to Morpeth for travelling down and honouring the fixture, they never gave in and fought right up to the final whistle. A very good referee for the second week running as well, not as good looking though!
