Rovers started well putting Corbridge under pressure with good carries by Gregory, Bullock and Durrans but were unable to turn pressure into points due to giving away silly penalties. Lineouts were not as good as they should have been and with the home side having the upper hand in the scrums Corbridge started to look the better team. Rovers defence was good but a fine line by the Corbridge full back saw him cut through the Heughers backs from the half way line to score under the posts. 7 – 0.
Rovers bounced back, Gregory and Durrans again having good runs into the home 22. After a better scrum a penalty was awarded but instead of kicking, the ball was passed to Wise who was unlucky to be stopped on the line. The visitors were unlucky on another 3 or 4 occasions with strong runs from Westhorpe, Flounders, Smith and Fleet who was an early replacement for Hanley but they unfortunately finished the half pointless.
The second half started with Rovers continuing to pressurise and turned things around in the srums taking 2 against the head. Using Westhorpe and Durrans to make ground from first phase was paying off and with Pinchen supporting well he fed Smith to continue his fine form scoring in the corner. Fawcett hit the sideline conversion straight through making it 7 – 7. After another spell of good defence on their own line, Rovers fought back up the field but a long range penalty fell just short. A bad 5 minutes followed with Rovers normally strong defence looking non-existent and Corbridge scored a try in the corner after a barrage of attacks. 12 – 7. Rovers tried to come back with a great run from Railton unluckily getting stopped short and a good kick to the corner from Fafcett saw Smith just beaten to the ball over the line. The game ended with Rovers giving a penalty away when in a scoring position.
A good performance against a decent Corbridge side but this should have been a win. Need to learn from the experience, improve decision making at the breakdown, stop giving the ball away through silly mistakes and not panicking when on the opponents try line.
