Team; SAUNDERS, FLOUNDERS, COOKLAND, TAYLOR, HANLEY, BULLOCK, WILSON, LITTLE, STEPHENSON, FAWCETT, DOWDLE, MONTGOMERY, MULLER, GUNN, RAILTON, STEAD.
The game started and continued throughout with poor tackling from the Heughers and the Acklam winger strolled in for a converted try after only 2 minutes, 7 – 0.
Rovers hit back from the restart with Daz kicking a penalty a couple of minutes later, 7 – 3. The good play continued with strong runs from Monty and Fuzz then a kick ahead was chased by Gunn and Buller with Gunn getting the touch down, Daz went wide with the kick, 7 – 8, 16 mins.
The game was scrappy with penalties both ways, Randy was unlucky not to score, missing the ball over the line but Cookland got his first Rovers try after good offloading from Ben and Chris Taylor. Daz got the kick to go 7 – 15 up after 26 mins.
Acklam were not making it easy for Rovers and hit straight back scoring in the corner again after a number of silly penalties and soft tackles, a great conversion put them back in the game at 14 – 15, 33 mins.
Another simple try followed 3 minutes later from a line, centre crash and quick ball out, simple stuff but too few forwards willing to get across and defend, the conversion was wide but Acklam took a deserved lead, 19 – 15, 36 mins.
Rovers applied the pressure again and Cookland was unluckily held up over the line and further good ball was being wasted that could have went wide.
The second half started well with a penalty kicked to the corner, a good charge to the line by Monty and Anthony got the touchdown, Daz drop kicked the conversion, 19 – 22, 43 mins.
Daz was kicking into good positions and Matty Wilson dived over from a resulting forward drive, Daz missed the kick, 19 – 27, 50 mins. Straight after Buller was held up after a cheeky lineout steal then the game went a bit scrappy with Stevo getting binned after a couple of little outbursts, Daz missed a penalty, Jack Gunn came into the game more with a couple of good runs and Fuzz was stopped short after one of many charges.
Final score 19 – 27, could have been better, too many penalties, tackling poor and a bit lazy at times but we looked good when we picked the pace up with slick handling and offloading. Also nice to see the scrum going forward for a change but we did have 4 props, 3 more than normal!
